Marty Smith Motocross clinic - August 28

Postby pketchum » Tue May 18, 2010 11:36 am

Jeeps is proud to announce that 3-time Motocross Champion Marty Smith will host a motocross riding clinic at the club on the morning of Saturday August 28, 2010, the day prior to the Jeeps Vintage MX.

We need to secure a minimum of 10 (max 20) pre-paid $250.00 riders to make this happen. The lowest skill level accepted would be a decent novice on an 80cc bike to make it fair to all class participants. Payment must be in-hand 30 days prior to class, i.e. July 28th. You don't have to belong to Jeeps Cycle Club to attend this event. However, non-members will be charged the usual $10 Guest Fee in addition to the class fee.

If you're looking to improve your riding style, learn to ride within your limits, and become mistake free Marty's class is for YOU! To sign up you must contact Phil Ketchum at pnketchum@cox.net or call 316-440-8664. Deadline is July 28th.

Personally, I wouldn't attend the class on a vintage bike but rather on a modern or Post-Vintage bike.

Additionally, some friends of mine wrote back describing Marty's motocross clinic. I thought I'd share them with everyone.

These were unsolicited responses from friends of mine who have experience with Marty's MX Clinic. Marty says the clinic lasts 5-6 hours.

Mark Hildebrand wrote about Marty's St. Louis MX Clinic experience:
Yes, 80% is form you'll run on a flat 30 yard by 50 yard stretch (we used the starting straight. Then he will work on parts of the track after you got the basic forms and drills done. He's super adaptable to you and your skill level so he may have some young kids doing doubles and others just regular jumps. At the end he goes over and makes everyone take notes to remember what he went over. It's very cool! Is his son Tyler coming? If you you will not beleive this young man. He is the nicest most polite 21 year old I ever met. Plus no one will be faster then him at the track. He is a rocket and smooth as glass.

My next trip to Witchita is in a few weeks. I hope we can hook up.
Thanks
Mark

Mark Hildebrand wrote on the VintageMX site:
LET ME GIVE YOU SOME INSIGHT...I had Marty in for the St. Louis Supercross and we did a riding school. BEFORE the event we had a few cancel and other complain because the school was only 4-5 hours. 1 hour into the class half the riders (of young guys NOT vintage guys) couldn't finish the whole drill!! 10 Riders under 20 years old and NONE of them felt cheated at the end of the class. The Vintage riders had a hard time walking the next day at the Supercross!!! Any age...... any skill level will learn and love this class!!! It is worth every dime. Marty and his son are AWSOME!! Marty will spend 1 on 1 time with you and really make sure you learn what he is teaching. This class is THE BEST PERIOD.
Phil send any questions you get to me and I will help you make this a wonderful event.

Jim Roblewrote about Marty Smith's St. Louis MX Clinic:
We started at 8, were on the track at 9, and had to shut it down at about 2 or 3 because of bad weather. No one but myself even brought a vintage bike, and fortunately I had a couple of newer (04 &07) CR 250's with me. We spent a long time on cornering and starts, so we ran out of time for some of the things that I would have liked to have worked on. I learned a lot about "new" techniques (I haven't raced anything but vintage bikes for about 12 years, and some of the little things have changed quite a bit) for starts and jumps. Be sure to let people know if the school is for modern or vintage bikes! I've been to Gary Bailey's school twice, and his is somewhat more professional, but Marty's was more enjoyable. The dinner that we had with Marty and Roger D later that evening was great - Marty is truly an old-school pro!
Let me know if you have any other questions....

Jim Roble

Hey Phil,
Marty is Awesome! My girlfriend's son took lessons from him in San Diego back in 04. Marty is one class act. A little on the pricey side, but it was well worth every penny I spent. I have know Marty since his days on a Monark. Hope you get your class full and enjoy this. Not many get the chance to do something like this.

Yes, we have 5 spots left open. I have heard a LOT of people are interested but not a lot of committment on their part at this point. I need 10 firm committments and money in hand by July 29th before I pick up the phone and tell Marty "You're on" and make his plane/hotel reservations. Put out the word and let's "Git 'er Done" as they say.

I'm surprised that more Jeeps members haven't signed up for Marty Smith's Motocross Clinic. Perhaps they are saving up for the $1000 Andropovic exhaust system in the belief that it's weight savings will cause them to win vs. receiving professional instruction from a 3-time National Motocross champion.

I went to his school some years ago when the Hillsbourgh Track had him in, GREAT class, lots of basics that I'd either forgotten or had never learned along with more advanced riding techniques. I definitely came away a better rider/racer. WELL WORTH THE MONEY getting to Work With Marty Smith 8)

We have 6 confirmed riders for the Marty Smith Motocross Clinic to be held Saturday, August 28th. We require an additional 4 riders to pull this off. Step up and be counted! I'd sure love to see this happen - I'm going to the clinic - how 'bout you?

Come on folks... To get this caliber of training you would have to drive 2 - 3 states away. The food, lodging, and gas alone would probably pay for this class. This opportunity doesn't come to this part of the country very often and now it virtually in your backyard. This is one that you won't want to miss, Marty is an icon of the sport and really knows his stuff.
